Fitness and wellness are two things that are extremely important to me and that I strive to impress upon my family. However, most people in our country are going in the opposite direction. In fact, unhealthy is the current normal. Check out these stats:
– This is the first time in 100 years that children have a lower life expectancy than their parents.
– Nearly 40% of all children born in the U.S. in the year 2000 are projected to develop Type II diabetes.
– If trends continue, almost 90% of all adults in this country will be overweight or obese by the year 2030.
Many organizations and nonprofits have tried and failed to reverse this trend. However, It’s Time Texas (an initiative of Active Life) is launching a program to create change through a powerful and historical movement. They have created a statewide campaign to make healthy the new normal. It’s Time Texas is designed to build an army of motivated individuals, institutions and organizations to mobilize and build healthier communities.
The way to make healthy the new norm is to change behaviors. The program will work to increase healthy behaviors, increase the number of healthy places, increase demand for healthy products and services, and increase the number of healthy policies at local and state levels. The goal is to encourage each other and change our society from the ground up – this is not just about you and your family, it is about creating a healthier community.
So how exactly is this going to work? Some of the retailers you visit most (like H-E-B) will be selling keychain cards. Once you have the keychain card, you can use it to receive ongoing discounts and special promotions from participants who provide healthy products and services (including sporting goods stores, specialty grocers, gyms, and more).
In addition, purchasing a keychain card assists low-income students; every time someone buys a keychain card, It’s Time Texas will donate a keychain card to a low-income student.
